Biology -- General
Bioethics.net
This is the Internet's first and largest site on bioethics, produced and supported
by the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania. Its audience is both
scientist and layperson, and it includes a mix of content designed to appeal to
both types. It includes current articles in full-text from the American Journal
of Bioethics online as well as tables of contents of other ethics journals. It's
updated daily with today's bioethics headlines. Its only drawback is its design,
which has little logical order and small type.
BioMedCentral
BioMed Central supports SPARC (Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition)
which encourages low-cost alternatives to scholarly publishers. BioMed Central
makes several biology journals available for free on the web.
Biomedical Information
Resources & Services -- by Subject
The Karolinksa Institute Library in Sweden created this subject-oriented list of
online biomedical resources. It functions as a biomedical web portal, putting
sites in categories such as Molecular Biology, History of Biomedicine, and Biophysics
and Spectroscopy. As it's a portal, the quality of individual sites varies as does
their currency and value but as a collection of resources, the quantity and focus
is remarkable.
Biotechnology
Industry
A Financial Times survey of the biotechnology industry with links to articles providing
an overview and industry case studies.
Biotechnology
Resources
An excellent resource from the American Library Association. This site has numerous
links to biotech resources in industry, research, education, associations, e-journals,
discussion groups and more.
ChemFinder
This site links to many other Internet resources in the fields of biochemistry,
health/medicine, chemical structures and usage. Select "Indexed Sites" in the left-hand
column to find them.
National Center for Biotechnology
Information
Links to GenBank and other promising resources. From the National Library of Medicine
and the National Institutes of Health.
The Virtual Library:
Biosciences
The Virtual Library is the oldest catalog on the web, compiled by volunteers.
Molecular Cloning & Genetic Engineering
Genetics Education Center
This is a guide to Genetics information on the web. It was assembled by the Genetics
Education Center at the Kansas University Medical Center.
Cloning Webliography
Webliography of resources on animal cloning, including articles, books, organizations,
professional societies, and other websites. This site won the ICCMP contest for
best web site in biotechnology.
Genetic Engineering News
The online version of this bioindustry publication provides abstracts and highlights
rather than full-text but it does provide helpful outside links to conferences and
industry leaders.
Genome Gateway from
Nature Magazine
Nature magazine provides, through this gateway, links to all their papers published
on genome research, categorized by organism, as well as outside links to all things
genome related.
Genomics Glossary
This site is both searchable and browsable by term, and within entries for terms
are links to related terms and sites. The site is an excellent resource.
Human Genome Project Information
This site details progress on the Human Genome Project, a joint effort since 1990
of the Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health. It is browsable
with links to research, project information, news, publications, and issues, and
also searchable.
The National Human Genome
Research Institute
Homepage for the National Human Genome Research Institute, this site includes links
to the Human Genome Project, genomic and genetic resources, policy and public affairs,
and workshops and conferences.
