Hours

Library Open 24 Hours During Finals Week!
Galvin Library will open at 8:30 AM on Saturday, May 10 and remain open until Midnight on Thursday, May 15.

Spring Semester Hours:
January 22 - May 9
Monday - Thursday 8:30 AM - 12 AM
Friday - Saturday 8:30 AM - 5 PM
Sunday 12 PM - 12 AM

After 6 PM, library access is restricted to patrons with IIT ID.

Public Transportation

  • CTA trains (the "L") (http:www.transitchicago.com)

    • Red Line: exit at Sox/35th station (35th Street & Dan Ryan Expressway).  Station has an entrance/exit at 35th Street.

    • Green Line: exit at 35th/Bronzeville/IIT station (35th & State).  Station has entrances/exist at 35th & 34th Streets.

  • CTA Buses (http:www.transitchicago.com)

    • #29-State Street.  Stops along State Street in the middle of campus.

    • #4-Cottage Grove.  Stops on Michigan Ave. southbound, Indiana Ave. northbound, 1-2 blocks east of campus.

    • #1-Indiana/Hyde Park.  Runs Monday-Friday rush hours only.  Stops on Michigan Ave. southbound, Indiana Ave. northbound, 1-2 blocks east of campus.

    • #24-Wentworth.  Runs Monday-Friday morning through early evening only.  Stops on LaSalle Northbound, Wentworth southbound. 1-3 blocks west of campus (on either side of the Dan Ryan Expressway).

    • #35-35th street. Stops along 35th street, north end of campus.

  • Metra (http://www.metrarail.com)

    • Metra Electric has a stop at 27th Street & Ellis Ave, near Michael Reese Hospital.  The IIT minivan service stops about 3 blocks away at 29th & Vernon.  The minivan Schedule is here.

    • Metra suburban trains provide regular service to downtown Chicago from the north, west, and south suburbs and from Northwestern Indiana.  IIT provides frequent shuttle bus service from the downtown train stations to the Main Campus.  Click here for an IIT shuttle bus schedule.

  • Pace (http://www.pacebus.com)

    • Pace provides local bus service in the suburban communities surrounding Chicago.  Most routes make convenient connections to Metra or CTA "L" lines for travel between the city and suburbs.

  • IIT Shuttle Bus services (http://www.iit.edu/directory/shuttlebus.html)

    • The IIT shuttle bus operates between the Main Campus and the downtown campus and train stations. 

    • The IIT minivan service operates between the Main Campus and Prairie Shores, Lake Meadows, and Michael Reese Hospital (29th & Vernon).  

Driving Directions

From the North:
Dan Ryan Expressway east to 35th Street, turn left (east). Metered parking is located along Federal Street north and south of 33rd Street, and in the Visitor's Parking Lot (Lot A4) at 32nd Street and State Street. The entrance to the Galvin Library is on the fire lane off 33rd street before you reach the east side of State Street. 

From the South:
Dan Ryan Expressway west to 35th Street exit, continue north to 33rd Street, turn right (east). Metered parking is located along Federal Street north and south of 33rd Street, and in the Visitor's Parking Lot (Lot A4) located at 32nd Street and State Street, on the east side of State Street.  The entrance to the Galvin Library is on the first fire lane off 33rd street and west of State Street.

From Lake Shore Drive:
Exit at 31st Street, go inland (west) to State Street, turn left (south). Metered parking is available in the Visitor's Parking Lot (Lot A4) located at 32nd Street and State Street, on the east side of State Street. The entrance to the Galvin Library is on the first fire lane off 33rd street and west of State Street.

Parking on IIT Campus

Metered parking is available to all visitors, and is located along Federal Street north and south of 33rd Street, and in the Visitor's Parking Lot (Lot A4) located at 32nd Street and State Street, on the east side of State Street. Special event parking may be available in other parking lots on campus. Click here to view the IIT Parking Lot Map. Airports

IIT and Chicago are served by O'Hare International Airport, Midway Airport, and Meigs Field. Public transportation is available from O'Hare and Midway airports, and limousine or taxi will take you from all airports to IIT's campus. In the Library

Once you find the library, use the library map to guide you to the correct section of the library. 

Disabled Patrons

Galvin Library is accessible via a ramp by the front door, electrical doors and wide-gate access on the first level for individuals with wheelchairs. The second floor is accessible via elevator. The Reference area has a special adjustable computer unit for use by those in wheelchairs. Located near the Library entrance is a photocopier designed for wheelchair access. Library staff will also help with retrieving items from shelves.
